The LM P2 category (open or closed prototypes) is aimed at independent teams without links to constructors or engine suppliers.

The LM P2s share certain characteristics with the LM P1s (carbon monocoques) while respecting very strict cost caps.

The current regulations accept all constructors, and three engines are homologated: Nissan, Honda and Judd.

The 2017 regulations limit the number of constructors to four (Onroak Automotive, Oreca, Dallara and Riley/Tech Multimatic) and a single engine supplier (Gibson Technology).
